Gun Violence and Schools
Xxtra Xtra read all about it! This saying could once be heard on busy street corners, being yelled out by a young paper boy. The newspapers during these times were filled with politics, economics, and war. In today's age, we have headlines on TV, Social media, and the internet. And while there is a war going on in Ukraine, we also fight a war here on American soil. School violence and gun violence are not 2 phrases that should be mentioned in 1 single sentence. Unfortunately, this is what we hear in our news outlets more often than we should. Tuesday, May 24th another tragedy took the lives of young children who had not enough time in this world to say they had lived a life at all. Along with 2 teachers, these young students crossed over to heaven.
While we send our children to school to receive a proper education, as parents we can't help but feel nervous and scared as they step out of our protection and onto school property. As a future educator, it also makes me nervous to even follow my dreams and career goals.
My children attend school in another town which is about 15 minutes away. After the Texas school shooting my husband said, "next year I want the kids closer, in town. Because if anything was to happen we would be close." Understanding his concern I replied, "makes sense, but if there is an active shooter what could you possibly do? Storm the halls and take the shooter down?" It is inevitable at times and it is not fair to us as parents or the students who go to school to get an education. Our children should not be afraid to go to school, and we should not be afraid to send them.
Please forgive me if this article is dark this week, but I feel this is something that needs to be shared and thought about. Hold your babies tighter and listen to their needs. We can only hope and pray that the ones affected by school tragedies find peace in the days to come.
